Early Predynastic
The first farmers of Upper Egypt left no monuments, only their graves. Buried in shallow pits on the desert edge, laid on the left side with the head to the south, they took with them combs of bone and ivory, black-topped rippled pottery, and beads of shell and serpentinite. Much of what Egypt would later become is already implied here — the care for the dead, the reach for distant materials, the desert doing the preserving.
The earliest confirmed farming culture in Upper Egypt is known as the Badarian, named after the region of el-Badari near Sohag where it was first identified. Dating to around 4400 to 4000 BCE, the Badarian culture is known primarily from its cemeteries rather than its settlements, as the evidence for domestic life is fragmentary.
The dead were buried in simple pit graves, bodies placed on the left side in a contracted position, head pointing south looking to the west.
The Badarian people left behind a rich material record.
Their pottery is among the most distinctive of the entire prehistoric period, characterised by a rippled surface created by combing the clay before polishing, producing an extraordinarily refined decorative effect.
Personal items including hairpins, combs, ivory bracelets and bone beads appear in the graves,
as do the earliest cosmetic palettes, simple oval or rectangular shapes made from greywacke stone. These palettes, used for grinding pigment, would become one of the defining objects of the entire Predynastic period.
The Badarian economy was based on farming: wheat, barley, lentils and tubers were cultivated alongside the keeping of animals.
Naqada I
Farming villages along the river grew into something more stratified. Grave goods began to cluster, some burials markedly richer than their neighbours in the same cemetery — the earliest visible sign of a society sorting itself into ranks.
Through the careful preparation of the dead, embalmers and physicians gained a practical understanding of the body's internal workings. Their knowledge was rooted in observation and experience, but it was also shaped by the religious beliefs that lay at the heart of Egyptian society.
Even at this early stage, the distribution of grave goods was uneven, with wealthier burials clustered together in one part of the cemetery, a sign that social distinctions were already beginning to take shape.
Out of the Badarian world grew the Naqada culture, which archaeologists divide into three main phases. Naqada I, sometimes called the Amratian, continued many of the burial practices and material traditions of the Badarian but with increasing complexity.
Grave goods became more varied, hierarchies more visible, and the cosmetic palettes exploded into a range of zoomorphic forms: fish, tortoises, hippopotami, elephants and birds.
Three major centres began to emerge in Upper Egypt during the Naqada II phase: Naqada itself, Hierakonpolis to the south, and Abydos, where the royal cemeteries of the first pharaohs would eventually be located.
Boat imagery dominates the pottery of this period, reflecting both the practical importance of the Nile as a highway and its growing symbolic power as a mythical river. A society that had once consisted of small farming villages was becoming something altogether more complex, and the foundations of one of history's greatest civilisations were quietly being laid.
By the later stages of the Predynastic period, Upper and Lower Egypt were not yet one country. They were two distinct worlds with different material cultures, burial traditions and histories.
Starting from its Upper Egyptian heartland, the Naqada culture spread steadily into northern Egypt during the Naqada II phase, with cemeteries appearing as far north as the Delta site of Minshat Abu Omar.
Tomb U-j, dating to around 3150 BCE, contained twelve rooms, hundreds of imported Palestinian jars possibly containing wine, and around 150 small, inscribed labels bearing what appear to be the earliest known hieroglyphs. Egypt was not developing in isolation.
Long before the pyramids were built, Egypt's earliest kings were buried at Abydos, in a region known as Umm el Qaab. It was here that the rulers of Dynasty 0, Dynasty 1 and the early 2nd Dynasty were laid to rest,
Naqada II
Naqada culture pushed north out of its Upper Egyptian heartland, carrying its pottery, its burial customs and its tastes down the length of the valley. Whether that was trade, migration or something more forceful is still argued. That it ended with a single material culture running from the cataracts to the Delta is not.
Whether this reflected a peaceful movement of traders and settlers or something more forceful is debated. What is clear is that the economic pull of the north, particularly access to Mediterranean trade networks, gave the southerners a powerful incentive to expand.
It was found alongside two other extraordinary ceremonial objects: the Macehead of King Scorpion and the Narmer Macehead. Together, they offer the clearest window we have into the ideology of Egyptian kingship at the very moment it was taking shape.
Naqada III · Dynasty 0
Kings appear before Egypt does. In the century before unification, rulers at Abydos and Hierakonpolis were already using serekhs, ceremonial palettes and maceheads — the full vocabulary of pharaonic power, assembled before there was a pharaoh to wield it.
The climate was less arid, the river itself behaved differently, and the landscape was still taking shape. Understanding where ancient Egyptian civilisation came from means starting here, in the deep prehistory of the Nile Valley, where the story begins not with kings but with small communities making a life on the edge of the desert.
Pottery became more elaborate, with painted designs featuring human figures, hunting scenes and images of the victorious warrior, which would remain powerful imagery throughout the pharaonic period.
Trade networks were bringing exotic raw materials into elite graves: ivory and gold from the south, copper and stone from the eastern deserts, even objects reflecting contact with Mesopotamia.
How these two regions came together to form a unified state is one of the most compelling questions in Egyptian history. The northward expansion of the Naqada culture is one of the defining processes of this period.
But the archaeology of the Delta reveals no destruction layers that would confirm a military conquest. The truth is probably more nuanced: a gradual process of political consolidation in the south, followed by the extension of that authority northward through a combination of economic pressure, cultural absorption and, at certain moments, force. By the time the first kings of Dynasty 0 appear in the record, the foundations of a unified territorial state were already in place.
This is not simply a record of a military victory. It is a statement of ideology, an argument in images for why this king has the right to rule, why his authority is cosmic and not merely political, and why the natural order requires a single powerful figure at its centre.
Writing developed alongside the Egyptian state, becoming one of its most powerful tools. The serekh, the earliest way of recording a king's name in hieroglyphs, placed the royal name within a palace façade surmounted by a falcon and appeared on storage jars, seal impressions and labels attached to goods.
Early Dynastic
With Narmer, Upper and Lower Egypt become one kingdom, and the state starts keeping records of itself. This is the largest group of objects on this page: palettes, ivory labels, seal impressions and the royal tombs at Abydos, where the machinery of divine kingship was worked out for the first time.
By the Naqada II phase, something significant was happening. The culture was expanding outward from its Upper Egyptian heartland, moving northward toward the Delta and southward into Nubia.
Upper Egypt, with its narrow valley, access to gold and stone from the Eastern Desert, and increasingly complex farming economy, was the more dynamic of the two. Lower Egypt, including the broad expanse of the Delta, had its own indigenous cultures but was gradually being absorbed into the orbit of the south.
By the end of Naqada II, the indigenous material culture of Lower Egypt had largely disappeared, replaced by pottery and other goods originating in the south.
Cylinder seals, a form of object invented in Mesopotamia, are found in elite burials of the Naqada II and III phases. Mesopotamian artistic motifs, including the image of a human figure between two wild beasts, appear in Egyptian contexts.
And yet none of this represents a foreign invasion or the importation of civilisation from elsewhere. It reflects a world in which long-distance exchange was a normal part of elite life, and in which the people of the Nile Valley were active participants rather than passive recipients.
The question of exactly how Egypt became unified remains genuinely unresolved. Three important ceremonial objects excavated at Hierakonpolis, the Narmer Palette, the Scorpion Macehead and the Narmer Macehead, all carry imagery of defeated enemies and conquered peoples, suggesting that warfare played some role in the process.
Some artefacts offer an unusually rich insight into the societies that produced them, and the Narmer Palette is one of the finest examples from ancient Egypt.
Excavated from the temple of Horus at Hierakonpolis and dating to around 3000 BCE, it is carved from greywacke stone and measures just over sixty centimetres in height.
Despite its modest size, it is among the most studied and debated artefacts in the history of ancient Egypt.
The Narmer Palette is decorated on both sides with carved scenes of remarkable sophistication.
On one face, King Narmer wears the white crown of Upper Egypt and raises a mace above a captive he holds by the hair.
The falcon god Horus looks on, holding a rope attached to a human head emerging from the earth, a symbol of conquered peoples.
On the other face, Narmer wears the red crown of Lower Egypt and processes to inspect rows of decapitated enemies.
At the base of the palette, a bull, another symbol of royal power, tramples a fallen figure and batters down the walls of a settlement. Every element is deliberate, layered with symbolic meaning and unmistakably royal in its intent.
What the Narmer Palette tells us about kingship is as important as what it shows. The conventions it establishes, the king shown at enormous scale, enemies depicted as small and defeated, the use of the smiting pose, would persist in Egyptian royal art for the next three thousand years.
Whether it records an actual historical event or is better understood as symbolic propaganda remains a matter of scholarly debate.
The Scorpion Macehead, carved with imagery of a king wearing the white crown presiding over what may be an irrigation ceremony, suggests the existence of powerful rulers before Narmer himself.
Narmer may represent the culmination of that process, the figure whose reign marked a decisive threshold, rather than the sole founder of a new order.
What unification meant in practice, as opposed to in art and ideology, is worth pausing on. The palettes, maceheads and commemorative objects of this period present a vision of the king as absolute conqueror, master of both lands.
But the archaeological evidence tells a more complicated story of gradual cultural absorption, economic expansion and political consolidation over many decades.
The image of a single triumphant king smiting his enemies into submission is a powerful one, and it was clearly the image the early state wanted to project. Whether reality was quite so dramatic is another matter entirely. What is certain is that by the end of this period, the office of Egyptian kingship was established as one of the most powerful and enduring institutions the ancient world would ever produce.
By around 3000 BCE, something entirely new existed in the world: a large, centrally governed territorial state stretching over a thousand kilometres along the Nile, from the Delta in the north to the first cataract at Aswan in the south.
This is the Early Dynastic Period, and it is where the story of ancient Egypt truly begins.
and the changing design of their tombs reveals how the Egyptian state was becoming increasingly powerful and organised. The earliest Dynasty 0 tombs were relatively modest, consisting of simple double chambered structures.
By the reign of Den in the middle of the 1st Dynasty, an important innovation had appeared: a staircase leading into the tomb, allowing the entire structure to be completed during the king's lifetime.
Den's burial chamber was paved with red and black granite from Aswan, marking the earliest known large-scale use of this exceptionally hard stone. The royal cemetery at Abydos was more than a burial ground.
It was the centre of a vast funerary complex built to ensure that the king's power continued after death. The tomb of Djer, the largest in the 1st Dynasty cemetery, covered an area of around 70 by 40 metres when its subsidiary burials are included.
Those subsidiary graves are among the most unsettling discoveries from early Egypt.
Hundreds of people, probably retainers, officials and members of the royal household, appear to have been buried alongside the king, most likely sacrificed at the time of his funeral so they could continue serving him in the afterlife.
Djer's tomb alone contained 338 subsidiary burials. The practice seems to have ended after the 1st Dynasty, eventually giving way to small servant figurines and, later, shabtis, which symbolically carried out the work once expected of real people.
In the Early Dynastic period, writing served two main purposes: administering and taxing agricultural produce collected by the crown, and reinforcing royal authority through commemorative monuments.
The Narmer Palette is the most famous example of the latter. Inscribed labels from the royal tombs at Abydos represent the former, preserving what may be the earliest evidence of a state taxation system anywhere in the ancient world.
With the 1st Dynasty, the administrative centre of Egypt shifted northward. The Memphis region became the seat of government, and the large tombs of high officials excavated at North Saqqara reflect the growing complexity and stratification of the state bureaucracy.
The 2nd Dynasty saw further consolidation, culminating in the reign of Khasekhemwy, whose tomb at Abydos contains the earliest known large-scale construction in limestone and whose funerary enclosure, the Shunet el-Zebib, still stands to a height of ten metres.
Old Kingdom
The age of the great pyramids is also the age of the first named physicians. Egyptian medicine was already a profession with titles, instruments and specialisms — the swnw, working with poultices, blades and incantations in roughly equal measure.
Each year, once the floodwaters had retreated, farmers made practical decisions about what to plant and where.
Egyptian physicians, known as swnw, had an impressive range of tools at their disposal.
Poultices made from a range of natural ingredients were applied to draw out infection or reduce inflammation.
While some procedures could be remarkably effective, Egyptian surgery was generally far less invasive than modern medicine. Egyptian medicine did include surgical procedures, though these were generally minor in nature.
The Edwin Smith Papyrus frequently recommends applying fresh meat to a wound on the first day of treatment, likely because it maintained moisture, offered some protection and may have aided clotting. Linen was the material of choice for dressings and bandaging, its tight weave making it strong enough to support fractures and hold wounds closed.
Opium, possibly imported from Cyprus during the New Kingdom, and other plants with known sedative properties were available to them. However, the medical papyri make no direct reference to anaesthesia or pain relief being used during surgical procedures. It is a question that the evidence, for now, cannot fully answer.
These treatments remind us that Egyptian medicine was neither wholly scientific nor wholly magical. It was a practical attempt to understand, explain and treat the ailments of everyday life.
Faced with illness, injury and high mortality, Egyptian physicians combined observation, experience, religious belief and inherited knowledge in their efforts to heal. In doing so, they left behind one of the oldest and most remarkable medical traditions in human history.
When Djoser built his Step Pyramid at Saqqara in the 3rd Dynasty, transforming the royal mortuary monument into the first structure in the world built entirely of stone, he was building on foundations that had been laid over centuries.
The Early Dynastic Period was not a beginning. It was the result of a very long process of becoming.
Middle Kingdom
After a century of fracture Egypt reunified and turned inward, towards literature, administration and the body. The Kahun papyrus, the oldest surviving gynaecological text, comes from these years, separating conditions in language a modern clinician would recognise as diagnostic.
And so people gathered here. Settlements grew along the narrow fertile strip, hugging the riverbanks tightly, because to stray too far in either direction was to meet the desert.
Everything that made Egyptian civilisation so extraordinary — the pyramids, the temples, the elaborate bureaucracy of the state — was ultimately rooted in the productivity of the land along the river's banks.
Taxation was calculated against agricultural output, and the state had a very keen interest in how productive the land had been each year.
They were deeply intertwined, shaping how illness, healing and the human body were understood. Medical specialisation reflected this same divine structure. Each area of practice had its own patron deity. Duaw governed eye diseases.
Physicians distinguished carefully between clean wounds and infected ones, using entirely different hieroglyphic terms for each.
Egyptian physicians also recognised when intervention was too risky. Ebers 873 advises plainly: "you must not lay a hand on anything like this." Wound care was thoughtful and practical.
Several medical papyri deal specifically with women and children. The Kahun Papyrus, sometimes called the gynaecological papyrus, is devoted entirely to women's health.
Its first seventeen cases follow a consistent structure: a heading describing the woman's complaint, a diagnosis, and a prescribed treatment. Later cases cover fertility and infertility, contraception, and pregnancy detection.
Every stage carried real risk: puerperal fever, severe bleeding, obstructed labour and eclampsia were all documented threats. Princess Hehenhet, buried in the funerary complex of Mentuhotep II at Deir el-Bahari, had an extremely narrow pelvis, and her remains show evidence of a vesico-vaginal fistula, a tear between the bladder and vagina caused during a difficult delivery.
Queen Mutnedjmet, wife of Horemheb, shows the marks of multiple complicated deliveries on her bones, and among them archaeologists found the bones of a full term infant. She was likely around forty when she died.
The umbilical cord was not cut until after the placenta was delivered and the child cleaned, with no evidence of ligation. The placenta was considered a kind of double of the child, and some families preserved it for a lifetime, occasionally carrying it to the grave.
Elsewhere, Berlin Papyrus Case 30 recommends warm milk with mashed dates to soothe a child's cough, a remedy whose warmth and sweetness would have helped ease irritation and loosen mucus.
Second Intermediate
Egypt divided again, ruled from the north by the Hyksos and from Thebes in the south. It is also when the Edwin Smith Papyrus was copied — a surgical text working through forty-eight cases from the head downwards, with almost no magic in it at all.
Ancient Egypt was one of the greatest civilisations the world has ever seen, but daily life within it was precarious. The river that gave life also harboured invisible dangers. The desert was home to dangerous animals, workplaces were hazardous, childbirth was perilous, and for the vast majority of people, reaching old age was genuinely remarkable.
The average Egyptian could expect to live no more than four decades, and even those lucky enough to exceed that often did so in considerable physical discomfort. This was a society that needed medicine, and it rose to meet that need in ways that still astonish us today. Ancient Egyptian medicine was built on a fascinating foundation: the belief that healing required you to treat the whole picture, not just the physical symptoms in front of you.
Natron, the mineral salt used so extensively in mummification, also had a place in medical treatment.
New Kingdom
Egypt at its widest reach, and its best documented. The Ebers and Hearst papyri, the honey harvest painted in Rekhmire's tomb, the bag of natron from Tutankhamun's embalming cache — the empire's wealth shows up in its pharmacy as much as in its temples.
Along its course, it carved out a deep fertile valley and deposited something priceless: rich, dark fertile soil. This made life, and civilisation itself possible.
For the farmers of ancient Egypt, this was not a disaster, it was a gift: a predictable, reliable, life-giving force that returned year after year. This annual flooding, known as the inundation, was essential to survival.
When the Nile failed to flood, the consequences were catastrophic, bringing famine, starvation, and social and political unrest.
And for the people who lived along its banks, that rising water was not something to fear.
The ancient Egyptians organised their entire calendar around this cycle, dividing the year into three seasons.
First came Akhet, the season of inundation, when the Nile flooded and spread its waters across the land.
Finally, Shemu, the harvest season, when the land dried under the summer sun and the grain was gathered in. Three seasons. One river. An entire civilisation built around the pattern.
This was the black land the Egyptians so prized.
When seeds were sown into that wet mud, the mild autumn and winter sunshine did the rest, ripening crops by March or April with barely any need for additional watering. It was, in many ways, a near-perfect natural system.
But nature, of course, does not always cooperate. Too much flooding could destroy villages and wash away the very soil farmers depended on. Too little was equally devastating, leaving the land parched and the granaries empty.
Flax was equally vital, providing the raw material for linen, a fabric that clothed the population and was traded as a source of household income.
These were not cash crops grown for export. They were survival crops, grown to feed families first and meet the demands of the state second.
Canals helped distribute water further across the landscape — local, community-level efforts that worked with the Nile's rhythms rather than against them.
Once the harvest was in, the state was never far behind. Revenue officers moved through the countryside collecting a portion of the yield in grain, loading it onto boats and transporting it to central collection points.
For most peasant farmers, life was a careful balancing act: growing enough to feed the family, meet the tax demand, and set aside seed for next season.
The Nile gave life, but the state took its share.
On the other side sit a series of magical spells. To an ancient Egyptian reader, this contradiction made sense.
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of ancient Egyptian medicine is that so much of it was recorded. Physicians documented their observations, treatments, spells and case studies on papyrus, preserving knowledge for future generations.
Understanding the human body has always been a challenge. In ancient Egypt, much of that knowledge came from mummification.
The ancient Egyptians had a remarkably well stocked medical toolkit, and the evidence for it survives across several key texts. The Ebers Papyrus is one of the most comprehensive, covering everything from wound treatment to internal complaints.
The Hearst Papyrus records practical remedies for injuries and infections.
Honey was one of the most widely used substances in Egyptian medicine, appearing in over five hundred prescriptions across the medical papyri.
It was applied to open wounds, burns and ulcers, where its extraordinarily high sugar concentration prevented bacteria from surviving.
The Hearst Papyrus and Ebers Papyrus both record it being used in poultices to draw out pus and reduce swelling, bound against the skin with linen bandages.
The lotus appears repeatedly in the Ebers Papyrus, prescribed for digestive obstructions and liver complaints, sometimes steeped overnight in beer or wine before being strained and drunk, a preparation method that may have helped release its active properties.
These were not random choices. They were the product of a society that looked closely at the world around it, tested what it found, and wrote down what worked.
The Ebers Papyrus refers to a "knife treatment" used to drain or remove swellings from the body. In Ebers 865, a physician is instructed to puncture a fluid filled abdominal swelling with a knife while taking care not to damage the structures beneath.
Strips of linen were used much like modern steri-strips to draw the edges of a wound together, and lint made from linen or plant fibres was used to absorb fluid, sometimes soaked in oil or honey for additional benefit, as recorded in Ebers 767 for ear wounds. Suturing appears in seven cases in the Edwin Smith Papyrus, recommended for lacerations and open wounds.
The threads used were likely made from plant fibres or strips of animal material such as tendon or intestine. Interestingly, no evidence of surgical suturing has been found in mummified remains, though one 21st Dynasty mummy of a priest of Amun does preserve an example of an embalmer's incision that was sutured after the fact. Whether Egyptian physicians used anything to manage pain during procedures remains genuinely uncertain.
Cases 26 to 32 connect pregnancy with swollen breasts as a diagnostic indicator. Even toothache during pregnancy and painful urination appear, reflecting how broadly women's complaints were understood through the lens of the reproductive system. The Papyrus Carlsberg VIII, though poorly preserved, focuses on judging fertility and determining the state of pregnancy, including attempts to predict the sex of the unborn child.
Attempts to prevent premature birth involved placing knotted plant fibre at the birth canal, referencing the tyet, the magical knot of Isis, believed to shield the unborn just as Isis had protected the infant Horus from Seth.
This blending of observation and magic runs through everything connected to childbirth and infant care in the Egyptian sources. Childhood in ancient Egypt was fraught with danger. Between one in two and one in three children died before reaching adulthood, with mortality increasing again around the age of three when weaning exposed children to intestinal infections.
The medical texts respond to these challenges directly. Ebers Papyrus Case 782 records a remedy for a child crying excessively, combining poppy seeds with fly droppings scraped from a wall. The poppy would have acted as an effective sedative due to its opiate content, while the fly droppings reflect the magical elements that often accompanied medical treatment. The prescription was carefully limited to four days.
Third Intermediate
Central authority fragmented between Tanis, Thebes and Libyan dynasts. Medicine stayed where it had always been safest: in the temples, in the hands of priests of Sekhmet, goddess of both plague and its cure.
The best practitioners were trained in magic and medicine. Many also held priestly roles connected to Sekhmet and other deities who embodied both the power to cause disease and to take it away.
Late Period
Egypt under Saite, Persian and native kings, self-consciously reaching back towards its own deep past. Bronze votives and faience amulets survive in enormous numbers from these centuries — Isis nursing Horus, Taweret, the wedjat eye — the everyday apparatus of protection.
When a cause was clear and observable, practical remedies were sometimes applied with real skill and precision. But when illness arrived without obvious explanation, the Egyptians understood it as something beyond the physical world, something that required a response beyond the physical world too. This was not naivety.
It was a coherent and consistent way of understanding a universe that, for all their intelligence and curiosity, still held enormous mystery. The most vivid window we have into this world is a document known as the Edwin Smith Papyrus. On one side, it reads almost like a modern medical textbook: systematic, observational, methodical, working through cases of injury and trauma with careful attention to cause and outcome.
A single illness might have both a physical and a supernatural dimension, and a good physician was expected to address both.
Certain natural substances were valued for their ability to soothe, heal or protect the body, and centuries of observation had taught practitioners which plants, minerals and foods were most effective for particular conditions. Beyond remedies consumed or applied internally, everyday objects also carried medicinal purpose. The dark pigment worn around the eyes by Egyptians was not purely decorative.
It served real protective functions, shielding the eyes from the intense sun and helping to ward off insects that were a well-known source of serious eye conditions.
These texts reveal more than medical practices. They reflect a society that valued health, approached the world with curiosity, and sought to understand it. That spirit of enquiry remains recognisable even after four thousand years.
For the ancient Egyptians, the body was more than flesh and bone. It existed within a divine framework, with each of its thirty six parts protected by a specific god or goddess. Isis watched over the liver, Nephthys the lungs, Neith the stomach, and Serqet the intestines. Medicine and religion were not separate spheres of life.
Taweret and Hathor presided over childbirth. Sekhmet, already known as the lion headed goddess of pestilence, could send plagues across the land just as readily as she could be called upon to stop them. Horus held power over the bites and stings that were among the most common injuries of everyday Egyptian life.
The Brooklyn Papyrus focuses specifically on the treatment of snake bites, a very real and everyday danger in ancient Egypt. Together they paint a vivid picture of a medical tradition built on centuries of careful observation and natural remedies.
Its powerful osmotic properties made it well suited to treating surface infections, a use that turns out to be chemically sound.
Lapis lazuli, imported all the way from Afghanistan, was reserved for eye treatments, its rarity lending it an almost talismanic quality in the eyes of patients and physicians alike.
Physicians were not routinely present at births. That was the role of birth assistants, with a physician called only in exceptional circumstances. The real presence at every delivery was divine. The mother was identified with Isis, and goddesses including Nephthys, Hathor, Heqet and Meskhenet were invoked as protectors.
The Ramesseum Papyri include a striking case describing how to determine whether a newborn would survive. Parts of the placenta were mixed with milk and given to the infant to drink. Ptolemaic
Alexander's successors ruled Egypt in Greek while building temples in Egyptian. The papyri change language but not much else: a letter from the Fayum asks a man named Zenon for honey to treat an illness, much as an Egyptian physician would have done a thousand years earlier.
It was taken internally to soothe coughs and treat digestive complaints in children.
Modern science has since confirmed what Egyptian physicians understood through experience: honey is genuinely effective against a range of harmful bacteria including staphylococcus and salmonella.
The Brooklyn Papyrus records onion ground in beer as a remedy for snake bites, accompanied by an incantation, reflecting again that blend of practical and magical thinking. Fresh meat was applied directly to wounds on the first day of treatment, valued for supporting clotting and tissue recovery.
The Berlin Papyrus 3038 includes a pregnancy test in Case 199, a contraceptive method in Case 192, and a dedicated group of cases for children's complaints. Childbirth in ancient Egypt was genuinely dangerous. Women gave birth kneeling or seated on two separated bricks, a practice confirmed by the discovery of a decorated birth brick at a Thirteenth Dynasty palace at Abydos, its sides covered in protective magical imagery.
Roman Egypt
Egypt became Rome's granary, and its dead acquired faces. The Fayum mummy portraits — painted in encaustic on wooden panels, staring straight out at the viewer — belong to people who had their bodies wrapped in the old way and their likenesses painted in the new.
The Nile was not merely important, it was foundational.
This was not medicine guided by abstract theory. It was medicine built from centuries of careful watching, practical problem solving and hard won experience.
Ebers 872 recommends cauterisation before cutting to reduce the risk of severe bleeding, suggesting an awareness of haemorrhage and how to manage it.
One of the most intriguing conditions recorded in the texts is an illness called baa, appearing in infants in connection with breastfeeding. Its precise nature remains uncertain, possibly flatulence or a more serious infection,
but the Book for Mother and Child records a magical incantation for it invoking a range of protective deities including Ra, Sobek and the goddess Tayet, with the child compared to Horus under divine protection. A physical amulet was to be prepared and hung around the child's neck alongside the spoken spell. Here, as throughout Egyptian medicine, the practical and the magical were inseparable.
Egypt Today
Not everything in a course about Egypt is an artifact. These are photographs of the land itself — the Nile at Aswan, the flood plain, the wheat, the nilometers cut into the rock at Elephantine — together with the modern maps and reproductions used to explain what the objects alone cannot show.
Egypt has long been described as “the gift of the Nile”. This quote has echoed across more than two millennia since it was first recorded by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus.
Without its life-giving waters, ancient Egypt as we know it would not exist: no pyramids, no pharaohs, no hieroglyphs, no tombs, only an unforgiving desert.
Egypt sits within the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert, one of the largest and driest regions on Earth, stretching across an area almost as large as Europe. In this harsh landscape, the Nile River is nothing short of extraordinary.
Flowing for over four thousand miles from the heart of East Africa, the Nile River cuts through the desert before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea.
The ancient Egyptians had vibrant names for this contrast. They called the fertile land along the river Kemet, the Black Land, named after the dark silt the Nile left behind each year. Beyond it lay Deshret, the Red Land, the desert.
The boundary between the two was not gradual or subtle. It was sharp. Life on one side, and nothing on the other.
What made the Nile truly special was its rhythm. Every year, fed by heavy summer rains in the Ethiopian highlands, the river flooded. It swept down minerals and sediment, spread across the valley floor, and left behind that extraordinary carpet of nutrients.
The Nile did not just water crops. It shaped where people lived, how they organised their society, and ultimately, how one of the greatest civilisations in human history came to exist.
If the Nile was the heartbeat of ancient Egypt, then the flood was its rhythm. Every single year, with remarkable reliability, the river rose.
It was something to celebrate. Because without it, there was no harvest. Without it, there was no Egypt.
Then Peret, the growing season, when crops were sown into the thick, nutrient-rich mud left behind as the waters retreated.
The secret ingredient in all of this was silt. As the floodwaters slowed and spread across the valley floor, they deposited a layer of dark, mineral-rich sediment.
The consequences of a failed flood were not just agricultural. They could shake the foundations of the state itself. Towards the end of the Old Kingdom, a series of particularly low floods, combined with a drop in rainfall across the region, contributed to the collapse of centralised government and ushered in the turbulent period historians call the First Intermediate Period.
To keep a close eye on the river, the Egyptians developed Nilometers: carved markers, typically set into the riverbed or along stone quays, used to measure the height of each year's flood.
They were a practical tool and a political one. A good reading brought reassurance. A worrying one sent ripples of anxiety through the entire system. In a land where everything depended on the river, knowing what the Nile was doing was of vital importance.
The Nile did not just sustain life in ancient Egypt. It created wealth.
Farming in ancient Egypt was, at its heart, a local affair. The most important crops were emmer wheat and barley, the staples that fed families and filled state granaries alike.
Water management was central to making the most of the land. Farmers built and maintained earthen banks around natural flood basins, controlling how long the water sat on the soil before being released back into the river.
Physicians trained within this system at institutions known as the House of Life, attached to the major temples, where medical knowledge was studied, recorded and passed down through generations. What is striking about Egyptian medical knowledge is how observant and methodical it was.
The hieroglyphs themselves reveal how Egyptians thought about the body: shortness of breath was written using the image of a sail, inflammation was represented by a burning brazier, and the flutter of an irregular heartbeat was conveyed through the image of birds in flight.
Symptoms were recorded and they were also visualised. Treatment was similarly hands on. Fractured bones were set with splints made from bark and secured with bandages. Wounds were closed with stitching or drawn together using strips of linen used as adhesive tape.
Plants were equally central to Egyptian treatment.
Before examining how Egyptian physicians treated wounds and injuries, it is important to consider the limits of their surgical knowledge. The surviving medical papyri, together with evidence from mummies and skeletal remains, reveal a tradition of practical treatment and careful observation.
Long before the pharaohs, pyramids, and hieroglyphs, people were living along the Nile. But the world they inhabited looked very different from the Egypt we know.
Three major centres competed for dominance in Upper Egypt during the Naqada II and III phases: Naqada, whose ancient name Nubt means city of gold; Hierakonpolis, an important cult centre associated with the god Horus; and Abydos, which would become the burial place of the first kings. Evidence from elite cemeteries at all three sites suggests that they represented separate and possibly rival polities.
The political unification of these competing centres in Upper Egypt most likely preceded the unification of north and south, achieved either through alliances, warfare or some combination of the two. It is at Abydos that the most telling evidence survives.
Foreign contact was a consistent feature of the late Predynastic world, and its influence can be seen in the material record. Lapis lazuli, which could only have come from Afghanistan, appears in Upper Egyptian graves.
The question of whether Narmer was the first king of a unified Egypt is equally complex.
The kings of Dynasty 0, buried at Abydos in increasingly elaborate tombs, demonstrate that the institution of kingship was developing over generations rather than appearing fully formed at a single moment.
